Exe Juniors Take on the World in Travemunde

Five of our dedicated junior RS Tera sailors recently travelled to Travemunde, North Germany, to proudly fly the flag for Exe Sailing Club at the combined RS Games and Tera World Championships.

The prestigious event featured four days of intense racing across a real mix of challenging conditions, testing the mettle of every competitor on the water. The regatta kicked off with a gruelling first two days, characterised by stiff breezes of 15-22 knots and a demanding, long sail just to reach the racecourse from the launch area.

Our young sailors handled these physical and mental challenges incredibly well. Day two proved particularly exhausting, culminating in nearly six hours on the water. Waiting ashore, parents understandably didn't know quite what to expect from the returning fleet. However, Freddie Mew competing in his very first international event perfectly captured the remarkable resilience of our team. Approaching his dad, who was bracing for the worst, Freddie simply smiled and said, "Thanks for bringing me to this event."

Throughout the entire week, both on and off the water, the Exe sailors were an absolute credit to the club.

The final day brought a dramatic shift in weather. Winds dropped to a light 3-9 knots, allowing the fleets to squeeze in their final two races and complete an eight-race series for the Championship.

When the final scores were tallied, the Exe contingent delivered fantastic results against a world-class international fleet:

Pro Fleet

  • Stefan Anderson: 20th
  • Neva Pearson: 62nd

Sport Fleet

  • Barney Rhodes: 4th overall
  • Jack Rowsell: 47th
  • Freddie Mew: 59th
With next year's World Championships set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Garda, Italy, the buzz is already building. After such an inspiring performance in Germany, we could very well see even more Exe juniors making the journey for that one!
